A mid twentieth century folk art piece from Pitcairn island. A pipe holder made by Fred Christian, a direct descendant of Fletcher Christian, who in 1789, led a mutiny against Captain William Bligh and seized control of HMS Bounty.
Naively carved and lettered. Slightly wonky. A charming and rare piece by a direct descendant of Fletcher Christian.
Reads on one side;
Souvnir (sic) from Pitcairn island the home of the mutineers of the bounty. The bounty left Spithead on the 23rd of Dec.1787. Number on board 46. Arrived at Tahiti on the 26th of Oct 1788. One sailor died on the voyage. 23 weeks at Tahiti. Left on the 4th of April 1789. Mutiny broke out on the 28th of April 1789.
