A mid twentieth century life-size pigs head, carved from pine.
A one off naively carved piece with a slightly crazy look. We loved it as soon as we saw it.
Sourced in Orkney.
We're unsure of the history of this piece. We originally thought an advertising piece for a Butcher, and this could well be the case, but the hanger on the back is marked with the broad arrow of the Royal Navy. Perhaps it’s an a up-cycled hanger, perhaps the pig was carved for the mess or perhaps by a bored serviceman posted to Scapa Flow during WW2 or someone simply whiling away the hours whilst at sea?
We’ll never know the who, the when or the why but a very unusual and decorative find, currently hanging in our kitchen.
Approximately 15" wide, ear tip to ear tip, x 14" high. (38 x 35cm)
