A rare late 19th century pictorial sign for Thorley’s Food company, showing a Berkshire pig.
Joseph Thorley established his business in 1851 and it was incorporated as a Limited Company in 1898. The companies headquarters were at Regent's Wharf in King's Cross, London, on the site of an old lime kiln. Thorley's were known for their eye-catching advertising and branding which often featured livestock portraiture.
The sign has some losses to the edges. The H & O of Thorley's and the metal to the left of the pig have bullet impact marks and losses where someone in the distant past has taken pot shots at the sign, these have dented, but not penetrated, the metal.
32”W x 27”H. (81 x 69cm)
